Whangarei is the gateway to our winterless north. The only city in Northland is also New Zealand’s warmest city.
Situated on the beautiful Whangarei Harbour, the Town Basin is a marina complex with restaurants, shops, galleries and plenty of space to sit and admire the docked boats.
With many attractions nearby including the Whangarei Falls, the Whangarei Quarry Gardens and the Adventure Forest as well as a number of museums and coastal and mountain walks you are sure to always find something to do.
With nowhere in the district being more than 40 kilometres from the spectacular coastline Whangarei is a beach lover’s dream. Drive down the coast in your rental car to take in Bream Bay with its 22 kms of beach creating a giant arc of white sand lapped by clear blue water. Waipu Cove is a popular and patrolled swimming spot in the area and the Waipu Caves offer stalactites, stalagmites and glow-worms near the entrance. Head out from Whangarei town and drive the Whangarei Heads peninsular, as the road hugs the harbour this spectacular drive ends at the gorgeous white sands of Ocean Beach.
More stunning coastline, beaches, swimming, fishing and diving can be found to the north along the Tutukaka Coast. You can also access charter boats to head off and explore the fabulous and unique Poor Knights Islands from the Tutukaka Marina.
